Việt Lương '87 - tướng quân đội Mỹ đầu tiên sinh ra ở Việt Nam. Tướng Việt Lương đã nói về cuộc hành trình của mình như một người di dân đến Hoa Kỳ và con đường đưa ông vào quân đội.
Trong một bài phát biểu quan trọng tại buổi tiệc thường niên lần thứ bảy cho các cựu chiến binh của USC và sinh viên ROTC tại khách sạn The Westin Bonaventure ở trung tâm thành phố Los Angeles vào ngày 23 tháng 3 năm 2017. Tướng Lương Xuân Việt đã chiếm được trọn vẹn tình cảm của các cựu chiến binh và các gia đình quân đội cùng ngồi lại với nhau bằng câu chuyện nói về một cuộc trốn thoát hiểm nghèo từ Việt Nam và cuộc đấu tranh của người nhập cư ở Mỹ.
Tướng Lương Xuân Việt nói:
" Câu chuyện huyền thoại này chỉ xảy ra ở đây "
Vào năm 2014 Tướng Lương đã trở vị tướng đầu tiên của Hoa Kỳ sinh ra tại Việt Nam. Ông tiếp lời:
"Tôi là người Mỹ theo sự lựa chọn chứ không phải từ khi sinh ra."
Tại buổi tiệc trong niềm tự hào chào đón 800 khách vinh dự của các binh chủng trong quân đội Hoa Kỳ . Ông C.L Max Nikias chủ tịch USC ghi nhận sự cam kết không đổi của đại học đối với lực lượng vũ trang Hoa Kỳ.
C. L. Max NikiasNikias nói: "Đó là niềm tự hào của chúng tôi, đó là tình yêu của đất nước. Bữa tiệc này là một lời nhắc nhở mạnh mẽ rằng chúng ta đang sống trong một đất nước được sinh ra trên một giấc mơ hùng mạnh của tự do. Những cựu chiến binh của chúng ta là thế hệ của một truyền thống oai hùng những người luôn đi theo tiếng gọi đó và chúng ta một lòng biết ơn sâu sắc đối với họ "
Khi Giới thiệu khách mời danh dự, Nikias nói:
" Không có bất cứ một người nào có thể đại diện cho những gì cần thiết để trở thành một người lính hơn Việt Lương."
Giá trị về Tự Do mà tướng Lương phải trả giá khi ông vừa mới 9 tuổi, ông và gia đình chạy trốn khỏi Việt Nam năm 1975, một ngày trước khi Sài Gòn sụp đổ. Một chiếc trực thăng hàng hải của Mỹ đã đưa gia đình Lương đến hàng không mẫu hạm USS Hancock. Đứng trên boong, người tị nạn trẻ tuổi đã quyết định một ngày sẽ phục vụ cho quân đội Hoa Kỳ. Tướng Lương Xuân Việt nói:
"Chúng tôi đã không đến đây để chiến đấu và chúng tôi chắc chắn đã không đến đây để chết," Ông tiếp : "nhưng chúng tôi khao khát tự do và chúng tôi sẵn sàng đánh đổi mạng sống của mình trên con đường đi tìm tự do"
Tướng Lương Xuân Việt nói về thời niên thiếu sống tại Los Angeles bằng những đồng tiền ít ỏi mà cả gia đình kiếm được từ việc làm ở các trạm xăng hay những công ty may mặc nhỏ.
Tướng Lương Xuân Việt nói
"Chúng tôi đã có tự do và quyền lựa chọn cách chúng tôi sống cuộc sống của mình,"và "Chúng tôi đã được hưởng những cơ hội mà Hiến pháp trao cho chúng tôi."
Từ một cậu bé tỵ nạn đến một vị chỉ huy của Quân đội Hoa Kỳ, khi nói với các học viên, ông nhấn mạnh đến trách nhiệm cũng như một mệnh lệnh :
" Bạn sắp chuẩn bị cho một cuộc hành trình đáng kinh ngạc," Lương nói. "Thế giới mà bạn đang bước vào sẽ rất phức tạp, vì vậy bạn phải có can đảm để đối mặt với nó."
